Carrick RFC

Over the past 13 years Carrick Rugby has become a firmly established part of the wider community and acts as social hub for many young people. The demand for playing rugby within the local area is now huge. There is a great feeling of one entity between the school and the club and it helps to form an efficient youth development structure which enables individuals to progress through the school and develop their skills before going on to play senior rugby for the club like many people have done so before them.

Carrick Rugby through Carrick Academy gained 'School of Rugby' status in 2011 and we have used this to help develop an effective structure within the school. Carrick Rugby is now one of the biggest ‘Schools of Rugby’ in the country. We have a development team of five staff who are employed by the club which features our Development Officer, assistant development officer, administration manager and two modern apprentices. They oversee and deliver all of the rugby related activity within the school on a weekly basis. Our development team also work closely with the 17 feeder primary schools within the Carrick and Girvan cluster by delivering weekly inputs and introducing them to basic rugby drills from an early age. We field 7 boys and 3 girls’ rugby teams on a weekly basis who play against some of the top independent and state schools in the country. We also field 4 sides from P1 to P5, who play regularly during the season.

In the senior club we field 2 senior teams on a weekly basis and have fielded a 3rd XV at times over the past year. Our playing numbers have grown dramatically in recent years (over 350 registered players) and we continually look to improve and develop the services we provide. By exposing kids to rugby as early as possible they are then able to gain experience and develop their skills as they progress through the system. Our aim is to provide children and young people of different backgrounds and abilities with the opportunity to play rugby on a regular basis throughout the year. We are always striving to improve and develop and we always look to try and produce better rugby players at all levels.

Financial support enables us to continue our operations while also helping to support our annual transport bills and staffing costs which are always our biggest outlays. Due to rurality of our location and lack of facilities we regularly have to travel by bus to Glasgow and further afield to play school rugby fixtures. Carrick Rugby are extremely grateful to the Friends of Scottish Rugby for their support as it enables us to continue our existing operations while also looking to develop specific areas for the future.
