Purpose:
The Strathmore Rugby Club Community Trust was founded on 1st June 2017 with the charitable aim of the advancing public participation in sport, in particular the advancement of public participation in rugby union and rugby league.

Vision:
Developing people through rugby

Mission Statement:
We are a charitable organisation dedicated to providing the opportunity for everyone in the local community of the Strathmore Valley, including Forfar, Kirriemuir and Brechin, regardless of previous experience and ability, to participate in rugby and other physical exercise to enhance fitness levels, improve diet, instil discipline, teach respect and promote a sense of community and belonging.

Rugby is renowned for these values and they are at the heart of everything we do. They are values shared by our partners - Strathmore Rugby Club, Brechin Rugby Club, local schools, the Scottish Rugby Union and Scotland Rugby League. We aim to instil the rugby ethos into participants, coaches and volunteers of all ages so they can develop and enjoy the health and social benefits of rugby.

By the beginning of 2020, the Trust will have created a sustainable programme of projects centred on rugby, health and the community. Utilising the facilities of Strathmore and Brechin Rugby Clubs, we will provide opportunities for people of all ages and sporting abilities – including those from disadvantaged backgrounds - to participate in rugby and other forms of exercise. Those that wish to develop a playing or volunteering career in rugby can do so through our Academy programme which is a pathway to playing or volunteering for either Strathmore or Brechin Rugby Clubs.

Values:

Rugby - Rugby has long enjoyed a reputation as an inclusive and social sport based on respect and a sense of belonging to a club or community. These core values are at the heart of the Trust and its partners. The Trust aims to instil the rugby ethos into its players, coaches and volunteers to engage them and encourage lifelong participation in sport.

Health - People start sports to improve their physical and mental well-being but often stop due to a lack of proper guidance and understanding in how to prepare their body for activity. The Trust aims to increase participation by educating people on how to prepare, how to stretch and how to condition themselves and by creating a safe, social and supportive environment. Encouragement will be given into eating healthily and improving general lifestyle.

Community - The Trust will work with partners and clubs to create sustainability by educating coaches to improve their personal skill level. The aim will be to have educated and supported players who will continue to play and support their club. The Trust will encourage a sense of community in players so that they give something back to their clubs and the partner charities to create sustainability of the Trust's objectives.

Projects:

Rugby Academy – A holistic programme open to both males and females of secondary age designed to develop the students as athletes and people. The students receive education in strength & conditioning, psychology and nutrition alongside sessions on rugby union, rugby league and other sports. In addition the students will have the opportunity to become qualified coaches (both codes as well as in strength & conditioning), first aiders and referees and be encouraged to volunteer for their sports club and the Trust. Walking Rugby – A non-contact variant of rugby designed at keeping people active and tackling social exclusion. Sessions include an informal dinner whereby participants are encouraged to share rugby memories and watch rugby matches and documentaries. We are developing partnerships with local health professionals to establish referral programmes.

Inclusive Rugby – We are establishing a unified rugby team in partnership with Trust Rugby International, the Strathmore Clan, which will involve adults with learning disabilities playing rugby alongside able bodied players. We are also developing autism friendly rugby sessions for primary age children with autism. We are exploring further inclusive rugby projects utilising our partnerships with local rugby clubs, health professional and disability groups.

Thank you to Friends of Scottish Rugby for this donation which will be used to fund our rugby projects, the application process was straight forward and we appreciate the speedy and positive response.
